How Can Bush Win a War When He's Delusional About the Enemy?

Fear, fear, fear. Notice how much the deceptive rhetoric about terrorism and al Qaeda has increased these past couple of weeks? As the 2008 election gets closer, and the campaign heats up, the Busheviks are ratcheting up the lies and distortions in a last-ditch attempt to cling to power and justify this colossal fiasco known as the Iraq war.

In his press conference Thursday, Bush invoked al Qaeda 30 times as he, as usual, deftly morphed his Iraqi disaster to the one that took place here on September 11, 2001. So much so that the NY Times Friday has a front page article (finally, for crap's sake) devoted to Bush's BS. Later that night, Press Secretary Tony Snow-job told "fair and balanced" Bill O'Reilly that the war is necessary and we gotta keep fighting because al Qaeda still wants to kill us.

And to seal the deal, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff earlier this week announced that his "gut" says another al Qaeda attack could be headed to U.S. shores this Summer. No major substantive evidence to support his theory, mind you, just some good old fashioned GOP pre-election intuition. And no raising of the color-coded terror alerts, either. I wonder what his gut says about the 8th race at Aqueduct tomorrow. My kid's headed to boarding school in September, and I could use the extra cash.

Fear, fear, fear. These one-trick ponies are relentless, and they will keep turning up the volume on the incendiary terrorism rhetoric right up until the last voter pulls the lever on election day '08. All of which is designed to continue justifying the Iraq debacle and keep Americans afraid...very, very afraid.

But how does Bush intend to win a "war" in which he clearly is misguided and delusional about the enemy we're fighting? How does a supposed Commander-in-Chief lead his nation to "victory" (whatever the hell that is) when he's the only one standing who believes in the mission? By all accounts, the insurgents killing us in Iraq, are Iraqis; holdover Sadaam loyalists, Baathists, Sunnis, Shiites...take your pick. They're killing us because we invaded their country. They're killing us because, according to all the latest polls, they don't want us there. They're killing us because we're now in the middle of their civil war. There is a small faction of terrorists--al Qaeda of Mesopotamia--that's indeed killing our soldiers in roadside bombings and suicide attacks, but they total well under 5000 and did not exist until after the U.S. invasion in 2003, according to the Times. To say AQOM is why we're in Iraq is utterly preposterous and shameful, but that doesn't stop the president.

"The same folks that are bombing innocent people in Iraq," Bush told reporters Thursday, "were the ones who attacked us in America on September the 11th, and that’s why what happens in Iraq matters to the security here at home."

Either he is a liar of criminal proportions, or he's truly delusional and believes his own propaganda. If he's intentionally deceiving the public, then he should be impeached, removed from office, and be thrown in jail as a war criminal. If not, then the President of the United States of America, the most powerful leader of the greatest nation in the world, is sending his soldiers to die in battle where there's no clear enemy. I ask again, how can this impulsive lunatic win his equally insane war if he is clueless as to the mission and the enemy?

It's truly unfathomable how Bush can stand before the press, Congress and the American public and continue to spew this fear-mongering rhetoric--or delusional psychobabble--about Iraq and al Qaeda and the need to "stay the course" despite the facts on the ground, the wishes of the Iraqi people, the monumental dissatisfaction here at home, and the desertion by his own party. He's pathetic, dangerous and ill-equipped to lead our great nation. My stomach literally churns at the thought of having to look at him for another 17 months until he's gone.

On another subject......we could use your help at The Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated in my wife's honor to help carry out her spirit and passion, with the goal of assisting women filmmakers. As you may know, Adrienne was brutally killed in NYC on November 1, 2006. Through the Foundation, her commitment to filmmaking lives on. We've finalized a scholarship with NYU's Tisch School of the Arts/Kanbar Institute of Film; and grants with Columbia University, American Film Institute, NY Women in Film and Television, the Independent Feature Project, and the Nantucket Film Festival. Other initiatives will follow. Please visit our website to learn more about our mission and to make a donation. Every little contribution helps preserve Adrienne's legacy, and to help create something positive out of this horrible tragedy. Thank you.

Adrienne's film "Waitress" opened in theatres May 2nd to incredible rave reviews from the NY Times, LA Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Time, People, Entertainment Weekly, Ebert & Roeper ("Two Thumbs Up"), Leonard Maltin and more. Since then, it's been playing to packed audiences across America. It's a truly wonderful film that you're sure to love. A link to the trailer is below. Enjoy.

LET'S HOPE AMERICANS DON'T FALL FOR IT THIS TIME. I WOULD NOT PUT IT PASSED THEM TO HAVE US ATTACKED AGAIN TO GAIN OUR SUPPORT.

Go Andy!!!.....You always see through the smoke and mirrors....so much for the "Shock and Awe". Is Cheney still alive by the way? He hides well.

I agree. Now, with Chertoff spewing the big bad wolf of al Queda yet again, the administration is on full frontal "attack" of the American sensibilities. I've been saying for over a year, if a false flag event occurs on our shores, these folks will set up militåry law and dicta†ørship. How close are we? Who in Congress has the courage to speak out? Call your Congressman man and have them support H.R. 333, the Kucinich amendment to impeach Cheney, before we bomb Iran, have a false flag "hit" somewhere in the rust belt and Bush invokes his Presidential Directive 51, where he doesn't have to put a national emergency in the Federal Register. Sound the alarm folks. Wake up America.

Andy, great article---but as much as we all hate Bush---and believe me, I DO----i hate the ones who LET HIM DO THIS MORE!

I'm afraid that the President is delusional about many more things than just who the enemy is, Andy. He, and his nearly-paranoid VP, continue to believe that if you repeat an untruth enough times, people will believe it. Do you remember such statements as "Al Quaeda was supported by Saddam Hussein."; "We had to invade Iraq to eliminate WMD's."; and my all-time favorite, "The insurgency is in its final throes."?

Like clockwork, the President trots out the old "terrorists are about to attack us" warning whenever he's in political hot water, whether or not there's any truth to it. Quite frankly, many people have had enough of the "boy who cried wolf" attitude, and aren't buying it this time. It's easy for a politician to play to people's fears, and this shopworn tactic is what the President and his administration are good at.

Just as Michael Moore warned us on CNN with Larry King that there would be no health care for all if we, the people, didn't DEMAND it by constant protests, writing letters and calling our representatives. THe same is true about this war; the same thing about Bush and his continued "free pass" to continue lying and keeping us in Iraq.

In addition to our recognizing the problem and complaining to each other, we have to start DEMANDIN that there is change. Start with Pelosi and impeachment.

This week we celebrate a special birthday. Monica Lewinsky turned 31. Can you believe it? It seems like only yesterday she was crawling around the White House on
her hands and knees, and putting everything in her mouth.

They grow up so fast, don't they?

Thanks for a good article and for pointing out the enormous elephant in the room who nobody seems to pay attention to. Not only does Bush come off as a delusional spewer of lies, but I feel compelled to point out the bigotry of fighting a war against a country who didn't attack us, but still has similar religion and skin color. America has been brought low enough by Bush. Let's get rid of him and start the country back on an upswing. I read a quote in another article the other day by a soldier in this war who said "The only one's in Iraq wanting US to stay are the ones who will have to leave when we do".

You need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and getting all your opinions from Faux News.
I'm sure you're not aware of this, but it was your hero BUSH who took a month-long vacation just before 9/11 and ignored critical PDBs from his intelligence people. Instead of taking action, he went fishing.
On the other hand, various terrorist plots were thwarted under Clinton, including a plot to simultaneously blow up airliners over the Pacific.
Oh, and the terrorists who bombed the WTC in 1993 were apprehended and are sitting in jail today.
Please: I beg you: turn off Rush OxyMoron and think for youself for a change.

Andy, Great comment! When is Congress going to stop this madness, and impeach these madmen!! What are they waiting for? This President MUST be removed from office immediately before one more day of killing and suffering goes on-

To make the unfathomable about Bush fathomable, read Glenn Greenwald's new book. He is one of the few people writing who understands Bush's mentality, and he is the clearest in his writing about it.

...If Democrats would only condemn Islamic terrorists as much as they condemn conservatism, we might be in a better situation than we are today...

When Islamic terrorists prove they can do as much damage to this country as conservatism has done, they will be worthy of the Democrats' condemnation.

Meanwhile, the US is plenty strong enough to withstand nearly anything Al-Quaeda can possibly throw at us. Aside from the knee-jerk reactions from the right wing, we could survive a 9/11 type attack on a weekly basis.

What we cannot survive is the destruction of our Constitution and our economy by a pack of warmongering mobsters such as we have now.

What we cannot survive is the FEAR that allows us to stand idly by, or even applaud, while conservatives trash our economy, our moral authority, our world status and everything else that the U.S. used to hold dear.

We cannot survive the FEAR that causes our citizens to believe anything and the press to become cheerleaders for war profiteers and stenographers for the WH.

We cannot survive the FEAR of being called "anti-American" or "liberal" that prevents Congress from doing their Constitutionally mandated duties of oversight.

Conservatives pose a far more insidious danger to this country than any rag-tag band of turrists could ever mangage. I'm sure OBL thanks GWB every day for his, and our, cowardice.

Franklin Roosevelt would have had Osama if he was in charge of our security now. You can bet on it.

No doubt about it -- Roosevelt would have captured Osama by now and would not have destoryed a country to do it. However, I think even "Ronald MacDonald" would have caught him by now.

Pete,
If you are fine with weekly terrorist attacks, I hope you happen to be in the next one.

1:01 Democrats are too kind than to wish that you:

1. would have to go to the emergency room to see about your cancer that needs treatment;
2 would lose your job because it had been sent overseas;
3. are spied upon illegally by the Bush administraiton;
4. can't afford the gas prices;
5. are in debt because of medical bills and cannot delcare bankruptcy;
6. serve in our army and you have to return to duty almost immediately after your last tour was finished;
7. are going to die, or your wife, unless your can get an abortion'
8. are on death row, and are innocent, but you can't get an appeal;
9. are retarded and on death row for a crime you don't understand that you committedm, or you're on death row and you are only 12 years old;
10 work for Northwestern and you salary has been reduced by forty percent and your pension cut while the CEOs collect millions;
12. have children who are fighitng an endless and useless war;
13. were illegally denied a vote in the last election; or you did vote, and your vote was not counted;
14 are heart broken to see the Constitution ignored and your country suffer;
15, are a shrimp fisherman but only shrimp from China are being bought in this country;
16. had a beloved pet (if you do indeed love dogs) that died of poisoned food from China;
17. were a victim of Katrina and remain one;
18 lost families in 9/1ll terrorists attack because Bush ignored the warnings of such an attack;
19: are unable to even think of sending your very bright children to college because the economy for the middleclass is so bad; and,
20. suffer what so many Americans do suffer: working two jobs to pay for insurance, gas, food, medical bills, unaffordable housing, etc.

anonymous 3:01 pm,
Anyone can make a list, but your list has nothing to do with anything and it's simply a waste of my time to even type a response to your enumerated nonesense.

You are also lying that Democrats are too kind for anything. Democrats call people Nazi's for having a different opinion(s), so don't tell me Democrats are too kind.

"7. are going to die, or your wife,
unless your can get an abortion"

So, what is the purpose of Partial Birth abortion, which has absolutely no medical purposes?

Partial Birth Abortion, fully supported by Democrats, requires the induction of birth process. As the baby is born, the infant's skull is cracked open and the brains are sucked out of an innocent full term baby.

Is this one of the things kind Democrats support ? I do know that Democrats sure like to use my money to pay for them.

The pro-life and "kind" Republicans are against abortion even if it would mean saving the mother's life. Or didn't you know that was in the deal. So a woman's life is not as important as the life of a fetus. Many times a partial birth will save the mother's life, but there are very few abortions at that late stage. Republicans are "pro-life" but they feel more "pro" for some rather than others.

In addtion to that, there are many groups of Chrisitans as well as the Jewish people who believe the Bible states that life and the soul begin with the first breath. Gen2:7 and other verses. They are as sure they are interpreting the Bible correctly as you are.

Medicare and even insurance companies pay for your viagra. Is that all right?

US: Top al-Qaida in Iraq Figure Captured

The U.S. command said Wednesday the highest-ranking Iraqi in the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq has been arrested, adding that information from him indicates the group's foreign-based leadership wields considerable influence over the Iraqi chapter.

Khaled Abdul-Fattah Dawoud Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, also known as Abu Shahid, was captured in Mosul on July 4, said Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner, a military spokesman.

"Al-Mashhadani is believed to be the most senior Iraqi in the al-Qaida in Iraq network," Bergner said. He said al-Mashhadani was a close associate of Abu Ayub al-Masri, the Egyptian-born head of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Bergner said al-Mashhadani served as an intermediary between al-Masri and Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri.

"In fact, communication between the senior al-Qaida leadership and al-Masri frequently went through al-Mashhadani," Bergner said.

"Along with al-Masri, al-Mashhadani co-founded a virtual organization in cyberspace called the Islamic State of Iraq in 2006," Bergner said. "The Islamic State of Iraq is the latest efforts by al-Qaida to market itself and its goal of imposing a Taliban-like state on the Iraqi people."
