What the Hell is Wrong With Democrats? Will They Really Vote for McCain?

Something very alarming is taking place. A great many Democrats--disillusioned with either/both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama--are threatening to vote for the presumptive Republican nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain....or even sit out the election entirely. And to that I say, What the f**k? I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. What kind of logic is it to vote for someone who is against everything you stand for? What on Earth would possess a Democrat to vote for this chilling reincarnation of George Bush? How could anyone who's against the war, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, anti-guns, anti-Bush tax cuts...who cares about the environment, education, health care, the elderly, the poor, children...vote for a candidate whose party's major platform issue is to make war and to reduce taxes for the wealthy?

But more and more, I am talking to family, friends, acquaintances and business associates who say just that: that they are leaning towards voting for McCain come November. And just take a look at many of the comments posted on this very blog. People who say things like "Unless Obama's the nominee I will vote for McCain." Good grief, man, do Obama and McCain really seem the same to you? Does it not mean anything that Obama has one of the most liberal voting records while McCain just the opposite? How is this a choice to you? What has gotten into these people? Didn't we learn enough from 2000's Ralph Nader "protest vote?" Do we really want to make another catastrophic blunder like that again and hand our nation--our standing in the world, our military, our economy, our education and health care systems, our children's welfare--over to yet another reckless elitist cowboy?

A startling Pew Research survey came out this week that showed an astounding 20% of white voters will defect to McCain if Obama's the Democratic nominee. What kind of Democrat would rather vote for a staunch conservative like McCain over a progressive Black like Obama? A racist one. And each and every one of them should be ashamed of themselves. And what kind of Democrat would vote for such a devout right-winger simply because they don't like Clinton or her so-called "dirty politics?" A naive one; one who is seemingly quite comfortable losing yet another election to a Republican. Can you imagine Republicans waging a protest vote? Nah, they're too busy winning. You'd think after eight years of the worst presidency in U.S. history that Democrats would do whatever they could to win. When will we ever learn.....

I think a dissappointingly large number of possible Democatic voters will not vote for a black candidate and a number will not vote for a woman.
Many only see McCain as a war hero and a maverick. Well he was a war hero forty years ago and the way he kisses up to the right he is no maverick.

What I fear is what many fear, that a candidate will enter the convention with a delegate lead and walk out without the nomination having been the victim of shady back room deals. As it stands, the current plot looks like this is what could happen to Obama, validating the notion that the Clintons will do ANYTHING for power. She's already unapologetically likened Obama to Ken Starr and suggested that McSame would be a better commander in chief than Obama. If that happens, many will walk away from the Democratic party feeling burned by the process, likely with holding their vote or even voting for McSame in protest. In that event, the party will have no one to blame but itself. There's NO WAY Democrats should loose this election, yet if the above nightmare scenario materializes, we will.

That some white American men are so threatened that they would not vote for a woman, or in another scenario, a black man, proves that our country is regressing to barbaric standards. All the other advanced countries of the world have welcomed women in powerful government positions and most of these same countries are known for their tolerance. What is wrong with the American white male? Whatever it is, his problems will only get worse when more jobs are sent overseas, when he loses the chance for social security, when he loses his job and his house. All of these tragedies he will have brought on himself because of his very low self esteem. Only men comfortable with themselves and their abilities can handle a strong, intelligent woman or a strong, intelligent man of another race.

When I first moved to this little town and merely asked a plumber what the job would cost, I learned later he was shocked because "We're not used to an independent woman down here." That was two years ago. And when I sold my car a mechanic had to come to charge the battery which usually cost me ten dollars. When the new owner, a black man asked the cost, it was twenty collars.

We are in deep trouble in America.

If Hillary is the candidate we can still win without their vote. If the women in the country voted for her, the Hispanics, and then if the blacks who supported Obama voted for her she could be president. I, who was for Obama, now know he cannot win Already, today, I heard a Republicn saying if he were president all the Muslims would rejoice because they would fell his victory was theirs. This is only the beginning of what the Republicans will do.

I have a right not to vote in the general election. As I see it, it is the primary that counts. At least here I get to vote for whom I feel is the best suited candidate.

To vote for Hillary is no different than voting for McCain. So, if the best choice - as I see it - doesn't get in, a vote for a candidate that violates so many principals of morality, decency and truthfulness is something I can't abide to.

Hillary Clinton has said that only she and McCain are qualified to be President. How can she now support Obama when he becomes the party's candidate? Fuck her! Why the hell would I support her? She and McCain are both people of low character so what difference would it make who wins?

Hillary's latest comments expressing such "love" for McCain is ridiculous. Whether or not she or Obama is the candidate, why in the world state that only she or McCain is "ready" to be C-In-C. Pray tell us what are those qualifications she has? Pray tell me what qualification McCain has? Judgement ought to be the key ingredient. Is voting and maintaining her insistence that her vote was "correct" showing good judgement?

Voting in favor of the most stupid individual to ever reside in the WH demonstrates good "judgement"? Claiming her presence in Northern Ireland “I helped bring peace to Northern Island.” This hyperbole has been debunked. British Telegraph: "Hillary Clinton had no direct role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland and is a "wee bit silly" for exaggerating the part she played, according to Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former First Minister of the province." That's a quotation. ""I helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland," she told CNN on Wednesday. But negotiators from the parties that helped broker the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 told The Daily Telegraph that her role was peripheral and that she played no part in the grueling political talks over the years." That's a direct quotation too.

She assumes that noone will call her on such statements. The press is so anti Hillary that no one is interested in expressing the truth - give me a break. How will she spin-triangulate this latest bit of nonsense.

Win at any cost. Such a short term strategy. Pitiful

Where will Bill be during her presidency? Frankly, I think he'll be right there in the center of everything. I don't want anything more from BC. His statements against Obama were unjustified and now he's calling for a Clinton/Obama ticket. (Obama says NO and rightfully so.) Bill will be Prez and VP and Hillary nothing but a mouthpiece.

Good riddance to them both say I.

Hillary can't be trusted and is OLD school. I am in favor of throwing all the old bums out.

You are pro-Hillary and it appears as if you refuse to acknowledge just how badly the Clintons poisoned the well. African Americans are the most loyal democratic voters. Yet the Clinton camp made a decision to throw away the black people in order to marginalize Barack Obama. Personally I will vote for the democratic nominee in November. But you need to understand that black people feel betrayed and disgusted by the deliberate racial polarizing that the Clinton's are guilty of. Had Hillary stayed away from the race baiting, she could have counted on at least 80% of the black vote in November. Now who knows how many African Americans will feel justified in either staying home or voting for McCain. The Clinton's decision to insult their most loyal voters may have been political suicide.

I totally agree with what you're saying Andy. But what are your thoughts about about Hillary's comments that she and McCain are qualified to be Commander-in-Chief and Obama is just a speech? What if he becomes the candidate?

There is one and only one issue in 2008. Will white racists prevail again, or not?

Me thinks, so.

That is what America has been about since the first slave landed and is today.

People don't change, that much.

When this election cycle began I was perfectly happy with the assembled group of Democratic candidates. I was supporting Obama from the begining, but I could have been happy with Clinton, Edwards,Dodd, or hell I even thought Biden had some interesting ideas.

I was not prepared for how low the Clintons would go for power. They have adopted a scorched earth policy and it sickens me.

Andy, you say:"Do we really want to make another catastrophic blunder like that again and hand our nation--our standing in the world, our military, our economy, our education and health care systems, our children's welfare--over to yet another reckless elitist cowboy?"

I say, I think you mean "cowgirl". The thing I have learned in this campaign is if Hillary is the Democratic nominee, the pain of the last 8 years will only continue. There is no difference in approach to politics between her and McCain. They are the same. When she says she and McCain are the only ones qualified to be President what she means is they are the only ones dirty enough.

I think the only women left to vote for Hillary are the ones who are just like her. The spoiled-princess-I- have-to-have-my-way-or-everyone-will-suffer type. Women who have had to work hard for what they have and never had the time or notion to be the princess are very turned off by Hillary. She portrays herself as the victim but acts like she's already won the Presidency. With all the flags surrounding her in just about every news photo op you see these days. For every woman who's out there supporting her, don't support her just because she's a woman --
that's hardly the right reason. I know it's hard to see the person you support not winning hand over fist, I know it's hard to see your candidate use slimmy republican tactics against another democrat. The reality is you need to read up on your candidate and see that the Clinton's are very close to the Bush family -- Saudi's and all. It's a harsh reality but necessary for everyone to research. It's better to be informed than be hostile and end up voting for McCain. Just remember, if McCain is the president he will appoint more, very conservative supreme court justices. That's really something we can't afford.

Ok Ive read all these comments and they are valid. Here's the thing. We need one of the big dogs to take Hillary off into the corner and give her a little dutch uncle chat. She has to stop these dirty politics NOW or risk the party. Democrats are sick to death of dirty politics and will not abide by them. Previously, I was an Edwards supporter but would have been perfectly happy with any of the dem candidates then Obama won me over. Still I thought if Hillary gets the bid my heart will not break. Lately I have begun to feel that I will vote for Hillary if she gets the bid but will do so with my nose firmly held. The dems must win this one for the good of the country. McSame is no choice at all.

People of conscience have seceded from the union and are amazed that so many of the sheeple are not keeping their eye on the pea under the shell - they are too busy watching the shells. It matters not which puppet (shell) attaches to the ends of the strings come November - there will be no change. The US has pursued the same relentless policy under every puppet since WWII. Each occupier of the White House has made sure his segment advances the cause as planned. Look at the damage ol' pea picker Carter and Brezhinski did - that is what we live with today - uh, they created radical Islam, remember? The plan is based on the premise that "We own the world and can do with it as we please." And the "we" who own it are not thee and me. The only peaceful recourse left to the American sheeple is to secede from the union via mass voter boycott: ie, rescind our consent to be governed (sound familiar? Come on, think.). This is the only peaceful means to remove any shred of credibility the war criminals cling to. If we refuse to participate how can they claim to govern us? Unfortunately, otherwise seemingly intelligent people have been so brainwashed, they actually think there is a chance to affect the outcome - "be sure to vote" - that is just a good ol' "jack-me-off" feel good. Look at how much net space is wasted with all this phony "he said, no, she said, no, HE said, no, SHE said" ad inifitem - especially on "left, liberal" sites. Wake up, sheeple, before YOU are led to slaughter.

Anon 8:45...Very good question. I think Hillary saying that only she and McCain have the experience to be C-I-C is the dumbest, most counter-productive, reckless, self-consumed thing she could've said...and it could very well haunt her and the party should Obama become the nominee. But that said, does it mean because of it I'd now vote for McCain instead of her as "punishment"? F**K no! What the heck does one thing have to do with the other? Last time I checked, Hillary still opposed the Bush tax cuts; wants to end the war; is pro-choice; pro-gay marriage; anti-guns; pro-universal health care; and would appoint liberal Supreme Court judges. Against a staunch conservative like McCain, Hillary could be caught peeing in the middle of Pennsylvania Ave and she'd still get my vote. That she would'nt get other Dems' votes is pure insanity. It just shows that some Dems still just don't get the big picture. No one gives a rat's ass about "protest votes" but the Republicans, as they are the only beneficiaries of them. Be angry at Hillary all you want. Call her office to complain. Send nasty letters. But for Pete's sake, to say there'll be no difference between a President McCain and her is just plain foolish and misinformed. Democrats must vote this year for whoever the party nominates. The stakes are just too high not too.

Are they Republicans trying to start a movement against Hillary? I don't understand it. I reminds me of my sister who had symptoms of a serious illness and the doctor was supposed to call her at a specific time to report the test results. He didn't call. She fumed and fussed so I asked her why she didn't call him. "He's supposed to call me and I'm not going to give him the satisfaction." she whined. She responded to her doctor like she treated her boyfriend. Wake up you people and stop acting like high school kids.

Ms Ruffin seems to have overlooked that Bill Clinton made his remarks about Jackson after the obvious display of black racism when 99 percent of the Afro Americn population voted for Obama in SC. They had done the same for Jackson and Bill was making the observation that such a display of racism was not so pronounced after Jackson's run in SC. Bill's remark about "fairy tale" was reported out of context. That is the extent of remarks that could even wildly be observed as racism against Afro Americans.

Hillary should be reviled from every democratic/progressives point of view. She now shows that instead of being a representative of the truth and for good that she is nothing more than a dirty scare-monger who will lie and twit the truth EXACTLY like the slimy bastards in Washington now. McCain is no different either but at least he has shown he is above a treasonous attack against his own party. (note: Dems LOVED McCain when he was a maverick with progressive ideas but he's lost that human part of himself now.)

Hillary is obviously nothing even close to what people are suppose to think about her and is pretty much an opportunistic liar who will probably do more damage in the Whitehouse than shrub has.

As much as I am pained to say it, Hillary has betrayed us all and resorted to Rethuglican tactics, attacks and fearmongering. She has lowered herself out of contention for any true progressive who wants to see true change in Washington in this election.

A vote for HRC is now nothing but a vote for the status quo and the support of Lobbyist/Corporate controlled government where your only value as a citizen is as a profit generating consumer.

Asking people why they would vote for McCain under these circumstances is a no brainer. He doesn't APPEAR to be a flagrantly dishonest candidate. Hillary now does APPEAR that way to ANYONBE WHO CARES to look at the facts of her statements as demonstrated by her actions.

At least a vote for Obama still can be made with dignity.

A vote for Hillary could only be stomached as a vote AGAINST the rethugs but, a vote for Obama is a vote FOR the future of the people of America.

Hillary supporters are welcome to flame away but be warned. Facts will not surrender to rhetoric.

Anonymous @ 12:30 says only the fairy tale and Jesse Jackson comments can be construed as racist. I'm glad that anonymous gets to decide what black people perceive as racist.

Here is the reality. Clinton staffers and surrogates (Shaheen, Kerrey, Cuomo) made comments that many black people perceived as racist. Then Bill Clinton made the fairty tale comment (which didn't seem racially tinged to me but did to some) and followed that up with his post SC comments on Jackson.

His decision was a bad one because instead of reaching out to the black community and attempting to repair a slight tear he chose to antagonize us and create a massive rip in relationships.

Black people are by far the most loyal democratic voters in America. It was incredibly stupid to definitively demonstrate to African Americans that such loyalty is not reciprocated.

He should have tried honey, not vinegar.

Where exactly do I claim that race is not a factor in Obama getting over 80% of the black vote?

This is my point:

If the Clintons hadn't used race baiting as a deliberate campaign strategy they could have counted on getting the same percentage of the black vote in November (if Hillary were the nominee).

Clinton, Gore and Kerry all received approximately 80% of the black vote. If Hillary is the nominee there will be fewer black people voting; black people will withold their presidential votes; or more black people will vote Republican.

I don't know which Pew Survey you're referring to.... Link?

The one I just looked at, said this:

"Obama has much greater personal appeal to independent voters than does either McCain or Clinton. Fully 63% of independents rate Obama favorably, nearly twice the percentage expressing an unfavorable view of him (32%). The balance of opinion toward McCain also is favorable, but by a much slimmer 51% to 38% margin. The share of independents with an unfavorable view of Clinton is substantially higher (50%), while just 45% view her favorably."

Independents are going to be key in this election against McCain.

Okay, it has become very apparent that the Ostroy Report is a tool for Hillary. Hillary is a woman I have had nothing but respect and admiration for until last week. Last week she crossed a huge line for me. When she said John McCain is qualified to be the president and that she is qualified to be president, but that Barack Obama only has a speech, a bomb went off in my heart for Hillary. She has violated every rule of decency and fairness by trying to gut Obama, a member of her own party and if he happens to win the nomination, the GOP will run footage of her saying that line over and over. It made me literally want to puke. I did not like that Hillary voted for the war, but I was willing to forgive her for that; however, I will not forgive this act of opportunistic overreach. The Republicans are laughing themselves silly and praying that she will be the nominee because they know they have a chance if she runs against McCain.
So count me in as one of the "sickos" who will vote for McCain if Obama is not the nominee. I guess it is an attempt to show Hillary Clinton that she has crossed a line of respect that I can no longer muster for her.

I'm surprised to learn that the Afro American community, if I can believe these bloggers, needed to be treated with kid gloves to ensure their voting for Hillary if she's the nominee of the Democratic Party even though it is the only party that will work for their own best interests. They are "loyal Democrats" apparently only if they're continually "wooed". And, I'm stunned that others who have responded to Ostroy's article are so offended by Hillary's breach of campaign etiquette that they will follow the offended Afro American community and also vote against their own interests. They don't even indicate that they could be "sweet talked." Obviously none of these people learned the kindergarten lesson that it's not smart to "cut off your nose to spite your face."

It appears to me that you've got it backwards. If your quote is right,
"Unless Obama's the nominee I will vote for McCain." they are saying that if Hillary is the democratic nominee they will lean to McCain. If Obama is the democratic nominee they will vote for Obama. I'm an independent and thats how I feel too. I'm not comfortable with a democratic, 2/3 majority, filibuster-proof congress and a secretive, same-old same-old democrat like Clinton in the White House. I feel it would be as bad or worse than these last 8 years under little bush. If we can get a dozen more democratic senators I feel it might be best to have McCain in the WH. He couldn't continue the war if a veto-proof congress wants us out yet his veto would control the more outrageous goals of a far left congress. UNLESS Obama is the nominee, then I would vote for him rather than McCain. I want to trust that he is an honorable man and more moderate than Clinton is. And too fresh to have been bought off by special interests. All bets are off however if McCain continues to suck up to the religious right.

I am an Obama supporter, but I will definitely vote Democratic no matter who is the candidate. It would be a nightmare if McCain became President. But I think it’s unfair to completely blame Democratic voters for their reactions to the campaign tactics of Hillary Clinton. Karl Rove is working with McCain now, so the general election will be definitely bloody, but McCain has always been a different kind of political animal than Hillary. Maybe I’m wrong, but I find it unthinkable that McCain would have gone on “60 Minutes” and given the “As far as I know….” comment. Bob Herbert called this the sleaziest moment in her campaign. It shocked and sickened me. And it may lead people into the kind of thinking that you decry. When you combine that kind of action with her suggestion that we live in a dangerous world and only she and McCain are fully prepared to protect us….many people may think that he is a man of conviction and character and her character is suspect. This is a burden that both Clintons carry. She says that she is “vetted,” but she will carry this character issue into the general election if she becomes the candidate.

She has to think things through very carefully. Perhaps these tactics will help her defeat Obama….but at what cost?
She obviously voted for the war to appear tough enough to run for President. Will she help elect McCain by showing that she is tougher than Obama?

People who support Hillary have to try to remind her of the big picture. Her methods for opposing Obama pose dangerous risks.

"...instead of hillary clinton supporters voting for obama in the end vote for mccain..."

Hillary is telling her supporters to vote for McCain, essentially, when she says McCain's "lifetime of experience" makes him more qualified than Obama.

I don't know how any Democrat can still support her after this... it shows that she is willing to ruin our chances in November unless we give in, and make her the nominee.

As a result of her own bad behavior, Hillary will never, never get my vote. If Ralph Nader is going to emphasize election reform, I'll vote for him instead.

First, the Clintons offended and alienated African Americans, now they have pissed-off loyal Democrats like myself. There are lots of us, trust me. Hillary is highly unpopular with Independents, as well. There is no way she can beat John Mccain.

That is why Rush Limbaugh asked his "followers" to vote for Hillary...'cause the Republicans know they can beat her.

As a life long Dem, I, too, will either not vote, or vote for McCain if HRC is the nominee. Hell, she TOLD me to vote for either her or McCain when she made her C-I-C
comment, so I'm just doing what she said to do! I basically now see Hillary as a craven, overly ambitious shrew who is running for President more to gain personal power than for the good of the country. For Hillary, this campaign is about "my turn" and having Bill help her gain the WH since he made her suffer such a public humiliation when it was "his turn". This country is going down rapidly and we do not need more years of Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush (clinton, Clinton). If Barack Obama is not the Democratic nominee, to the Democratic Party, I say, "bye, bye"..........

The Obama campaign started the "racist" comments (the "fairy tale remark of Bill's was strictly related to Obama stating he was an anti-war candidate yet voting to fund the war for two years) and HRC's comment about MLK and Johnson was strictly saying inspiration is great but it takes legislation to truly make things change. The Obama camp jumped on these things as racist. So in my opinion they were the ones who injected race into the mix when before it was not there. He can play dirty too, the media just does not focus on it. We need a fighter and as much as people have vilified her, she keeps on. Do you guys really think the Republicans will change their tactics because he asks them to?

YES!. I will vote for McCaid rather than Clinto.
It is a protest vote. "Making a statement"-vote. Call it whatever. But if we are getting Hilary, that means high taxes for the Universal health insurance she is proposing AND a continuation of war in Iraq. My thinking is that I rather have McCain. We know him. We know he will be followin Bush's last 8 years. At least we don't get taxed. But an unpopular war will continue and thats that. With Hilary, unpopular war, more money spent on it and money for health programs. we get it on both ends. I say NO WAY for that. And I will follow thru on my protest vote. I say to the democratic establishment: You ain't seen nothing yet of the level of frustration yet. You don't understand the people and refuse to obey our will. Well, guess what?. Repuplican's will get that chance once more for your failure to understand that anger!
