"Mushroom Clouds" Part II: Grandma Sarah Warns "It's the WMD's Again, Stupid!"

While the stock markets miraculously ended flat to last week in a spine-chilling roller-coaster ride--down 1000 points in 2 1/2 days, up 1000 points in 2 1/2 days--it's still abundantly clear that the economy is in a state of absolute crisis. Financial experts are calling the banking and mortage disaster the most grave situation since the Great Depression. Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee for president, knows "it's the economy stupid" in terms of where voters' priorities are right now. And he also knows that, as an economic neophyte, if it stays this way, he will lose in November. So, in a pathetic act of desperation, McCain and his mindless Stepford-Wife of a vice presidential running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, ratcheted up the war-mongering rhetoric Friday.

To make a long story short, there's a "Rally to Stop Iran Now" to be held next Monday at the United Nations which was originally scheduled to be attended by Sen. Hillary Clinton and Palin. When Clinton found out Plain was on the bill, she backed out, not wanting to be a part of anything partisan (Palin is running for office, not Hillary). Not wanting to have its event be turned into a campaign circus, the organizers themselves uninvited Palin. Cut to Friday, when Palin's irresponsible and reprehensible attempt at fear-mongering did nothing but remind voters of all the lies and deception about Iraq perpetrated by President Bush, McCain and the rest of the sabre rattling Republican mob.

"John McCain and I are committed to drawing attention to the danger posed by Iran's nuclear program and we will not waver in our commitment," Palin said on the campaign trail. "I will continue to call for sustained action to prevent Iranian President Ahmadinejad from getting these weapons that he wants for a second holocaust."

Last week she warned in the now infamously embarrassing interview with ABC New's Charles Gibson of the need to ensure "that these weapons of mass destruction, that nuclear weapons are not given to those hands of Ahmadinejad, not that he would use them, but that he would allow terrorists to be able to use them."

"Second Holocaust?" WMD in the "hands of terrorists?" Sound familiar? Can you say, "Mushroom Clouds?" Threats of "nukular build-up" by a rogue Middle East nation whose name starts with the letters Ira? The only thing missing here is the damned "Q." I mean, seriously, are these reckless bastards for real? Have they ever read The Boy Who Cried Wolf? Why on Earth would they expect anyone to give them so much as an ounce of national security credibility after engaging America in the worst military blunder in our nation's history...one built on manufactured evidence and fear-mongering incendiary rhetoric of the sort Palin was peddling Friday. There ought to be a law against incessantly bullshitting the American public about non-existent WMD threats...especially weeks before a major election.

Of her cancelled appearance at the protest, a smug and disingenuous Palin said: "Unfortunately though, some Democrat partisans put politics first and now no elected official will be able to appear at that "Stop Iran" rally. Iran's pursuit of these weapons should concern all Americans; this should not be a matter for partisan politics." Yes, Grandma Sarah, it is so partisan of those protest organizers not to allow any politicians there. God, can this woman get any more embarrassing?

And a sanctimonious McCain issued the following statement criticizing the Obama campaign for not attending the protest: "We stand shoulder to shoulder with Republicans, Democrats and independents alike to oppose Ahmadinejad's goal of a nuclear armed Iran. Senator Obama's campaign had the opportunity to join us. Senator Obama chose politics rather than the national interest."

Sorry, Grandpa Johnny, Obama's not gonna get caught up in your pathetic, feeble bait-and-switch game to distract voters' attention away from their #1 issue right now, especially when he knows you have no fucking clue what the hell you're talking about when it comes to the economy. Advantage Obama.

On a side-note, over on Republican radio, that slimy weasel Sean Hannity, McPalin's faithful spin-monkey, accused Democrats of "cheerleading this crisis" on Wall Street this week just as they are "emboldening our enemies in Iraq." It needs to be said: Sean Hannity is a despicable human being who ought to be ashamed of himself. If anyone puts party before country, politics before national interest, fiction before facts, it is he.

The god forsakes Antony

by Constantine P. Cavafy

When suddenly, at midnight, you hear
an invisible procession going by
with exquisite music, voices,
don’t mourn your luck that’s failing now,
work gone wrong, your plans
all proving deceptive—don’t mourn them uselessly.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
say goodbye to her, the Alexandria that is leaving.
Above all, don’t fool yourself, don’t say
it was a dream, your ears deceived you:
don’t degrade yourself with empty hopes like these.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
as is right for you who were given this kind of city,
go firmly to the window
and listen with deep emotion, but not
with the whining, the pleas of a coward;
listen—your final delectation—to the voices,
to the exquisite music of that strange procession,
and say goodbye to her, to the Alexandria you are losing.

Dedicated to Senator McCain. Not Palin. Just McCain.
With humble, genuine respect.

"Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us,” -- Barack Obama May 19, 2008

McCain/Palin think Iran is a threat, Obama thinks Iran is not a threat.

In July 2008, Iran decided that it will no longer cooperate with U.N. experts probing for signs of clandestine nuclear weapons work

Just this week (9/16/2008) the IAEA shared new photos and documents purporting to show that Iran tried to refit its main long-distance missile to carry a nuclear payload

The question comes down to which side do you prefer America errs.

If you prefer America errs on the side of caution McCain/Palin are the candidates for you.

If you prefer America errs on the side of gullibility Obama/Biden are the candidates for you.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday (9/18/2008) that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans.

In 2007 Joe made $248,754 and donated $995

In 2006 Joe made $248,379 and donated $380

In 2005 Joe made $240,040 and donated $380

In 2004 Joe made $233,743 and donated $380

In 2003 Joe made $231,136 and donated $260

In 2002 Joe made $227,525 and donated $260

In 2001 Joe made $220,624 and donated $360

In 2000 Joe made $216,069 and donated $360

In 1999 Joe made $206,969 and donated $120

In 1998 Joe made $201,546 and donated $195

Joe makes 4 times the money I make every year and I donate more money to charity than he does every year. He claims it is patriotic to pay more taxes to help others, but he only wants to use other people's money to help others. Joe Biden is a class A hypocrite

11:50 am,
You said, "Joe Biden pays his taxes...so he is helping others..."

So do the wealthy Americans that Obama/Biden want to "take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people.". (Biden's words, not mine).

Obama/Biden call it 'patriotic'. I call it class warfare.

Liberals always want to support their causes with other people's money. Biden has made over $2.2 million dollars in 10 years and found it in his heart to donate $3690 to charity. He is a slimeball and YOU are a class A fool.

Awww, poor wealthy...I feel so sorry for them...This country can use some good old fashion class warfare...

By the way, what a rich person may call "class warfare" is what the have-nots would call "class consciousness". There's nothing wrong with acknowledging that the increasing disparity between rich and poor (a) exists and (b) is unhealthy for a democracy (even Jefferson saw this). It's not "warfare" by suggesting that rates on the wealthiest 1-2% of Americans return to levels seen under President Clinton. No one is stealing cars, homes, private jets, etc. We're just returning to more sensible tax policy. But keep on trying to scare the shit out of Americans, 12:37pm, but I don't think it'll do much good.

The tax rates under Clinton were hardly stifling innovation in our economy. So, there goes that old conservative bromide.

I'm sure 12:37pm would rather see us either fail in Iraq or cancel Social Security and Medicare due to our inability to raise sufficient revenue through our tax system.

In a liberal America successful people will be penalized for being successful. People who do nothing and make poor decisions will benefit from the hard work of others.

And then there are the "Do as I say, not as I do" liberals like Biden...

Republican propaganda alert!!! Beware of 3:09pm, he probably also wants to creat an "ownership society" by privatising social security...

(He probably doesn't care if the elderly begin eating cans of cat food after social security falls.)

"People who do nothing and make poor decisions will benefit from the hard work of others."

Must be a college republican!
Actually, sport, we all benefit from infrastructure, roads, bridges, national parks, clean air, clean water, improving education, caring for our elderly and veterans, providing body armor to our soldiers, research on contagious diseases, and on and on and on....

Welfare was reformed and essentially eradicated in 1996. Quit trying to make it seem as if all or most taxes benefit people who are lazy or made poor decisions. What'd you just read a Reagan biography? Please, you speak in generalities. You clearly are a kid or just plain ignorant.

The statistics speak for themselves. Only 62 percent of Americans pay federal income tax, meaning that 38 percent get a 100 percent refund of any taxes withheld. So Mr. Obama's 95 percent that will receive money from the government includes roughly 33 percent of Americans who pay no income tax. One-third of Americans pay no income taxes yet would receive a government check of perhaps $1,000 or more.

That is pure income redistribution. Some pundits argue that this is Keynesian demand-side economics. It is not. Having the government take money from business entities or affluent individuals and giving it to those who pay no federal income taxes is not Keynesian. It's Marxist.

Interesting discussion about taxes and wealth distribution going on. The way I look at things, perhaps a bit simply, is that the U.S. is supposedly a country, meaning we are supposed to have a belief in the common good. Perhaps everyone needs to start doing more for the poor and misfortunate who are our fellow citizens instead of doing more for "me".
Those who have the most, either by hard work or the hard work of others (or as their heirs) have their "most" primarily at the expense of mostly those who have the least. Kind of gives new meaning to "class warfare" - a lot of lower and middle-income people have made the ultimate sacrifice for those who whine and moan about how much wealth they will have that they can't take with them when they depart this world.
If we are a country, then why shouldn't we try, which admittedly will cost a whole lot of money, to make sure everyone gets to participate in the pursuit of happiness? Why is someone's 3 homes more important than someone else's 3 meals? Why should the most wealthy be the most healthy?
Being part of a country, in my opinion, means being part of something greater than oneself - JFK at least had the right words. Too bad a whole lot of so-called Americans don't act the part.
